Decker was a country singer who believed herself to be a traditional country musician in the past, was shocked to discover that the album was not marketed and produced with a focus on the mass market. Decker had to work hard to get control over the music she released after the two earlier singles were not so well received. The album that Decker released in the form of Daughter of a Gypsy and Sweet American Dreams by Mercury Records was shelved because Mercury saw the poor performances of three of her singles on the country charts.
